Tasty Yakiniku Near Kyoto: Hieidaira’s Nanzan

Ready to Cook
at Yakiniku Nanzan (焼肉南山), Otsu Japan
For the first time in ages, this evening we had a grill-at-your-table dinner at Yakiniku Nanzan (Hieidaira location).
I didn't have my camera with me, so I'm putting some photos from 2007 (seven years ago!) that I found in my image library.
We go in fits and spurts, but I think this might be the first time this year. It didn't disappoint.
I always order karubi (marinated short-rib beef), and today had six portions, which are described as for a single person but they're pretty small. It wasn't quite the gluttons affair of the now-closed all-you-can-eat beer/BBQ buffet that I wrote about in years past, and since I was driving there's no beer, but we ate well.

I took these photos almost a year before my first post on polarization filters, so perhaps I didn't really know about them yet. Now, one glance at the photo above and I know it would have benefited greatly from one.
The meat shown in these photos is gyutan , a name I prefer to the English. It's okay, but I much prefer kalbi.

If you find yourself in Kyoto or Otsu and can get up to Hieidaira, Nanzan is highly recommended.
Sony’s KW1 Does Not Squirt Purfume It Takes Selfies
In ancient times, before smartphones were around the fight was over cell phones. At one step Motorola changed the market forever when they introduced the a pink version on 2005. This was one of the first statements that the way a cellphone looks is just as important as its features. Now it looks like Sony [...]

One Photographer, Three Cameras : Shooting Cam Zink’s Mammoth Flip
Planning a fast paced, action sports photoshoot in which there is only one cameraman trying to capture multiple angles, is true test of any photographers ability to pre-visualize and plan a shoot. A skill which is priceless when you’re commissioned to photograph high energy sports and once in a lifetime moments similar to the exciting [...]

BIG News Coming Up
I will have a very nice announcement coming up whenever the site gets up to full speed again, in early or mid September. Right around the corner now. It concerns my friend Ailsa, in Brighton, UK.
I guess this post is just a lame content-free tease, like the corporations tend to do now. (No, Ailsa is not getting a new Miata.) But I'm really looking forward to telling you about it, so be on the lookout.
Mike

8/29/14 The Morning Coffee: The Paris Meetup (Thanks Franck!)
Ctein at a Parisian café. Photo by Franck D.
Your late Morning Coffee this morning (Ed. apologizes for falling down on the job*): Franck D., who organized a TOP gathering in Paris with Ctein, sent us the following short report.
The Monday evening of the TOP meeting was supposed to be a lovely evening in Paris, and the few Parisians that had not left the city were supposed to enjoy terraces with a drink in hand. A number of TOP readers had planned to meet up with Ctein inside Café Crème…at the exact time when a heavy summer rain hit Paris. As as result, the cafe filled up quickly and we found ourselves cramped on a couple of sofas and chairs in a recessed (and rather noisy) corner.
It was a fun evening though! Ctein, his friend Bayla, and seven of us from Mendocino, Zurich, Paris and a few other places spent the evening talking about how special TOP was, about Mike, about matte, glossy and baryta paper, and about lenses and printers. Ctein told us that printer profiles were overrated and that we should have the courage to ignore them and trust the printer to manage colors. Trying to recover from this shocking news, we looked at a beautiful set of (digital) prints that Ctein had brought with himHe had worked on these over the last year or so. We talked about science fiction, about Steve Jobs, about moderating posts, about how Mike will be able to get some help in the new TOP headquarters. We talked about tea and pu erhs, about Ctein’s soon-to-be released novel with Jon Camp and about the color of the sport car he will buy when the book becomes a best-seller.
An enjoyable night in the (temporary) TOP Parisian office!
Many thanks to Franck for hosting the meetup, to Ctein for making himself available (although I'm sure he did it just to have fun too) and to those who showed up.
Mike
*I haven't yet gotten into a rhythm with the schedule with these Morning Coffees. Of course, my whole life is torn up at the moment as I work toward the moving truck on Wednesday, coordinating things like UVerse hookup and phone service and the preparation of my current house for sale. The transfer of the workstation is coming up too, and that's going to be a big day. I'll get there, I think, but in the meantime, as I've said, your patience is much appreciated.
"Morning Coffee" is usually auto-published weekdays at 3:30 a.m. Central Time to be in time for morning coffee breaks in the UK and Europe. The feature is a month-long experiment that I'm going to try to continue when TOP revs up again for the Fall in mid-September.
I'll write about anything. Want to suggest a topic or ask a question? Leave it as a comment.

David Paterson: "Re 'Ctein told us that printer profiles were overrated and that we should have the courage to ignore them and trust the printer to manage colors.' OMG—surely they used to burn witches and others at the stake for less heresy than this?"
Mike replies: They did, but they would have long since tried to burn Ctein as a Wizard, and he would have waved his wand and turned them into salamanders.

A Review of the Ondu 135 Panoramic Pinhole Camera
In the world of photography products, there aren’t many surprises. We see variations on themes. New strap styles may seek to innovate (and sometimes succeed), but when you get right down to it, they’re straps. “New and Improved” sensor cleaning systems may improve on those that came before, but it’s still a blower or a [...]

Gawker Reporter Launches a Witch Hunt, Attacks a Photographer Allegedly Using Ferguson For Self-Promotion
Over the past month, the events taking place in Ferguson have become a significant catalyst for rising tensions between the public and the media. With the emotional responses that issues of racism trigger across the political spectrum coupled with the response to police brutality that we’re already so familiar with, there’s an unsettling amount of [...]
