10/20/14 The Morning Comment: Small Is Relative

Good morning!

Welcome to the Morning Comment—the replacement for the Morning Coffee. Every morning I'll talk about one reader comment from the last day or three. My responses are just my opinion. Even if I argue, I'm not necessarily claiming that I'm right and the commenter is wrong.

This morning's comment, from andy sheppard: "Whether you like it or it has wonderful image-making attributes or not, the [Leica] S would still seem to fall outside the remit of a list of favourite small cameras."

I didn't really mean for people to get hung up on what "smallish" means. I just meant, y'know, reasonable...not the hugest.

And size is relative. A small 4x5" camera is still a small camera, even if it's bigger than an Panasonic GM1.

Here's the case for the Leica S as a smallish camera:

Leicassize

...From the camerasize.com website of course.

The Leica S is 6% lighter, too. Yet has a sensor that's 30x45mm, vs. this Nikon's 24x36mm.

I guess the scoffers are right, though. The Leica is a big camera. It's just not that big.
