I'm on the road again today (sob!), but, to speak to John Krill's question yesterday as to what an enthusiast is, I had to think about that once for a survey. What I concluded is that if you name all of your hobbies or diversions or pastimes or passionate interests, the top three define your real enthusiasms. So if you name pinball and fishing and kite flying and needlepoint and gardening and video games and weightlifting and cooking ahead of photography, then you're not really a photography enthusiast. If photography has been among your top three interests consistently over the years – even if it sometimes slips into oblivion for a time – then you're a photography enthusiast.
For me over the years, books (and writing/reading), photography, and two channel music listening have long been my top three hobbyist enthusiasms. (And I'm interested in the technical as well as the artistic side of all three of those things.) I've always liked cars, but I realize that I'm not a true car nut. Your enthusiasms are the things you really take to and learn about because you love them and that bring you consistent pleasure.
That's my take on the question anyway – your mileage may differ.
