“Make a Splash” Photography Challenge | Top 10 Winning Photos

Make a Splash Photo Challenge Winners via iHeartFaces.com

We absolutely loved the fun “Make a Splash!” photos that were entered into our judged photo challenge. This month, the “All Boy” theme made for some precious, crazy, fantastic, and oh-so-cool photos to view. Thanks to everyone who entered and inspired other photographers in our community! It was amazing to welcome Brooke Shaden as our featured Guest Photographer Judge and we loved learning great photography tips from her exclusive Photography Interview with I Heart Faces.

We are now excited to be able to show off the Top Ten images that Brooke chose as her favorites from this month’s photo challenge! Congratulations to all of these winning photographers.

First Place: Helen John Photography

Brooke wrote: The symmetry of the bathtub, the clear focus of the boys and especially the eyes, paired with the light and airy yet moody atmosphere made this a striking portrait. I can so clearly understand who these people are by looking at their expressions, yet it was not the expression alone that made me feel this way. It was the attention to detail, the lighting, the timeless quality to the image that makes me feel like I am looking at a still frame from a movie. I am transported.

Second Place: levi+caity brill photography

I was very drawn to this image for the energy it brings. It is calm yet happy, in motion yet frozen forever. The relationships seen here feel real and true, and the choice of black and white made this feel nostalgic. The clothes are not distracting and the frame is not cluttered, and so the people can shine through.

Third Place: Melissa Lazuka Photography

My favorite thing about this image is the angle of it. We can’t see the eyes of the subject yet we understand the emotion. The smile is all that is needed to know what it feels like to be in that situation, at play as a child in water. To feel weightless and free. This image captures that in a way that is simple and fun in just the right way.

Fourth Place: Keli Hoskins – Kidnapped by Suburbia

The motion in this image is what drew me in and kept me looking long after. The way the ocean moves, the lines it creates, paired with the girl’s hair, makes the viewer believe that we are seeing just one image from a moving picture. I feel like I am watching a film when I see this and I want to know what happens next.

Fifth Place: Death By Great Wall

There are many ways to capture the expression of joy, and this image has done so, but has come about it in a way that allows the beauty of nature and human to shine. The red umbrella emphasizes the color and vibrancy that the girl brings to the image, while the muted and out of focus background give us a backdrop that allows the subject to stand out beautifully.

Sixth Place: Kari Anderson

The lighting on this image was what captured me, and after that it was the expression. The moody black and white works fantastically here, and the child’s expression is so very pure of heart.

Seventh Place: Sweet Rose Photography

This is the perfect representation of what it is like to be young and happy, despite the fact that we can’t see the face of the subject. It is playful and innocent and exactly what we love about children.

Eighth Place: Lindsey Welch Photography

The warm yellow tones through this picture made me look twice, and then I was captured by the connection between the man and boy. It feels like a great representation of what it is like for a son to emulate a father and to want to grow into a good man. The water gives it a sense of adventure.

Ninth Place: Elizabeth Pfaff

The framing on this image is interesting for how vast it makes the water look. The expression on the face of the subject is not clear as happiness or fear, and so the viewer is left to interpret this image with the small amount of knowledge we have about the expansive water and the person in it. The muted tones and soft highlights make for an interesting visual.

Tenth Place: Milani Photography

The boy’s timeless look, given his expression and outfit, make this feel very relatable. I was drawn to the way he was looking back, almost apprehensively, as though he were about to wander off into the distance and go on a journey…which in fact, he is. The muted tones and highlights help give that feeling to the viewer.
